in the book Eliza and Her Monsters the setting takes place in a recently present time. i don't believe it says the year but it seems to take place recently. Eliza is in a school of kids who shes not really friends with. Eliza only has online friends so that can make her school hours pretty lonely when her online friends are busy. ELiza doesn't really step out of her comfort zone in real life because of her social situation and many people see her as more of an outcast. if I was in Eliza's situation i'd probably be really upset. i'm not really the most social person, kind of like Eliza but if i was in her shoes with no in real life friends at all id probably get really lonely. I probably wouldn't be able to adapt really easily because at times it's hard for me to step out of my comfort zone, but i think eventually id be able to step out and make friends for myself.

Eliza and Her Monsters is set in the present day. The book dose not state the specific year but we can assume its set in the present day because the main character uses the internet. The main character, Eliza, goes to a school were she has no friends and is seen as a outcast. Her only friends are online ones and they are all busy when she is at school causing her to feel lonely during the day. She is the anonymous creator of a web comic named "Monstrous Sea" and has thousands of fans online. She feels like a complete nobody in the real world and that the internet is the only place that she can belong in.

Eliza And Her Monsters takes place in 2016 in a small town in Indiana. The book mostly takes place at Westcliff High, Eliza's house, and online. The setting allows Eliza to have many friends online, stay anonymous, and make money off of her web comic. Eliza doesn't have any friends outside of people she talks to online in the beginning, but as the book progresses she meets Wallace and other new people that she develops friendships with. My reaction to having to adapt to Eliza's environment would not be much different than her own reaction. The difference between our reactions would be that I would make more friends in the "real world" instead of only talking to people online because I am more sociable than Eliza. Since the time the book takes place is very recent, the decisions Eliza and the other characters make are relatable to the decisions people make now.

I love how you noticed the date. after reading your post i went back into the book to see if it said so and i saw that on the forum pages where the post their comments or photos, it actually does say 2016. I never thought about it twice when I actually read through the book. I expected it to take place in 2017-2018 not like that would make a difference but i find it cool how you noticed that and just wanted to point it out.

Eliza lives in modern time america, in a loving family. Her parents are still together, and they only want what's best for her. She attends high school, but has no friends at school. She has friends online, and does not see the need for friends in real life. Because of her setting, it should be safe for her to be herself and do what she wants with her life. Her life completely revolves around technology, and would be entirely different without it, because that's her only contact with her friends. If I was in her situation, I don't think it would change my life very much. I don't have many friends at school, although I do think I am a bit more social than Eliza. I would most likely make a few more friends than her at school if I was put in her spot, just because of my nature, but if I didn't I would be fine with it. I am like Eliza in that I don't see much need for friends at school, but unlike her in that I have a tendency to make friends with people without meaning to.

In The book Eliza and her Monsters, Two boys, Travis Stone and Deshawn Johnson are sort of bulling other characters. In chapter 5 Eliza gets smacked in the face with a homecoming banner that just suddenly fell and got glitter all over herself and instead of helping her, the two boys just laughed at her. Then later on in the same chapter The boys are talking to the new kid Wallace Warland and are trying to pressure him to show them his fan fiction about the website Monsterous Sea. Eliza decides to stand up to Travis and Deshawn and they end up going over to her and taking her sketch book and it ended up being like a game of monkey in the middle between the boys, and Eliza. I disagree with their actions at the beginning of the book. gladly i'm pretty far into the book, and they haven't came back. Honestly I have no idea why they even acted that way. In the book Eliza explains that 10 years go they where sweet boys. Middle School and popularity probably got to them causing them to be rude to other kids. I see a lot wrong with it. You cant Or you at least shouldn't bully other kids for no reason. Bulling is a real problem within real life too and its not right. nobody should have to feel as if they're alone and that nobody likes them all because of a bully. I wouldn't be able to suggest anything to them, except to literally just think about what you're doing. to imagine what its like to be on the other end of the stick. to be the one being bullied. how much it must hurt.

Im just gonna start up a conversation. How does everyone feel about the main characters Eliza Mirk and Wallace Warland?

Personally I love them both a lot. I believe they're both amazing characters and their character development has been great. Eliza and Wallace have come out of their shell. Eliza adapted Wallace as a friend and Wallace isnt afraid to talk in front of her anymore and i think that great character development.

I agree that they both were positively impacted by this relationship, especially when it comes to Wallace talking around people. Eliza helped him come back out of his shell after what happened with his dad, and was his only friend at his new school. Wallace also helped Eliza, because
I don't think she would have worked on bettering her life after her secret came out if she did not have him. She probably would have let herself spiral into depression if she did not have him to make her want to get better.

In Eliza and her Monsters, Eliza's parents write a piece about their daughter for a local news paper. The piece is for an article about graduating seniors at Westcliff High School, and they write about how their daughter is the creator of an online comic called Monstrous Sea. Eliza was keeping her identity a secret for safety reasons, and did not want any one to know who she was, but her parents did not know that because they did not bother to find out anything about her or her comic. If they had tried even a little to find out about her comic, or just asked her before they published the piece about her in the paper, they would have known that they really should not tell people about it.
I disagree with their actions because they always talk about how they want to be more involved in their daughter's life, but they did not put in any effort to find out about her, which lead to her life being completely flipped upside down, and possibly put in danger.
They are acting this way because they do not think that something online could ever be important, but that is just not true in this day and age.
I would suggest they ask their daughter about things they know she is interested in, even if they think it is not important. Just getting to know their daughter could have avoided this whole situation.

I can see where youre coming from. I feel like Elizas parents thought they knew all about it and probably didnt want to know what was actually going on. Some parents just leave things at that and think they know it all. But sometimes its also within the kids. sometimes the kids leave it at that and dont want their parents to know the rest, some kids want it to be private and dont want thier parents to interfere or judge them, so they just dont tell them things. they don't tell them things cause they'll be better off if they didnt know, and i feel like Wallace has tenancy's to do that, and not tell his parents certain things.

I hadn't thought about that side of it, you're right, Sometimes it could be the child's fault, sometimes we try to keep things from our parents because we think they don't need to know or it is not important. But the challenge is knowing how much to share with them, because they can't know every little detail about our lives, but they have to be at least somewhat involved.

    3. I completely agree. I have so many online friends... I dont know what I would do without them as I am so shy that I have a hard time making friends in person. I can talk to my online friends about anything and they feel the same way. Your right that things are different now than they used to be when our parents were teenagers.

Eliza is a relaitable character to me. I too struggle to socialize outside of school. Id rather draw at home by myself than go to a social gathering. I have issue connecting to my parents. And overall I am a very similar person to Eliza. But i don't agree entirely with everything she dose. Specifically, keeping MS a secret to Wallace. I get that she is quite the introvert, but im at chapter 18 in the book and theirs been implications by now that Eliza likes Wallace. If the two character are going to date, Wallace not knowing that Eliza is actually Lady Constellation will be an issue. I think She needs to spit out the truth before she even thinks about a relationship.

I understand why you feel this way, but I just want to point out that it can be really hard to share big secrets with someone you don't know that well, or haven't known for a while. You can't just "spit out" something so big.

I understand where youre coming from. I really wanted ELiza to just at some point in time blurt is out though she didnt. though when the word did get out that Eliza was really the creator, it was exactly how i thought it would be, Hectic. i assumed it was going to be a whirl wing of emotions and it definitely was. i felt bad for Eliza when the news came out though, with Wallace and Eliza ignoring eachother, but i was very happy with the ending and i wish there was a second book it was so good.

    3. I am the same way. I love to draw and it is an outlet for my emotions and when I am feeling anxious. I agree that she should have told him, especially with it seeming that they liked each other enough to date. There were times when I felt she was on the cusp of telling him but nope!

I believe that the most important conflict in Eliza and her Monsters is when Elizas Parents write a paragraph to their daughter and sent it to the school to put in the westcliff stars, a Newspaper at the school Eliza goes to. Eliza is a senior so all the parents of seniors wrote these paragraphs and sent them in for her child and others to read in the paper. In the paragraph Eliza's parents, Peter and Anna Mirk wrote about how Eliza owns an online webcomic called MonsterousSea. Only Eliza's online friends and family knows that she runs the page and when the news broke out that she owned the website, Eliza was in full panic mode. because everyone now knew who she was she was scared, when her in-real-life best friend, and boyfriend Wallace found out she owned the website and didnt even tell him, Wallace got super upset and stopped talking to Eliza for a while. This whole situation made Eliza isolate herself, and stopped talking to alot of people, and got unmotivated to even draw. When all this happened, i was really scare for Eliza. Ive had times where i felt the same as Eliza and its not a good feeling.

I like what you said about isolating yourself, I can relate to that feeling of being too afraid to do anything, even something you normally love. Its really hard to not isolate yourself or to lose motivation when something big or scary happens, and it is out of your control.

    2. I too have had times that I felt like Eliza. I have social anxiety and it is difficult for me to open up and make friends in person. I have several online friends from all over the United States. If something like this happened to me at school I would have a major panic attack! I felt so bad for Eliza and can totally relate.

Eliza and Her Monsters centers around a how no one knows that Eliza is the author of the online comic Monstrous Sea, and the main conflict is that she was outed to everyone by her parents. Eliza's parents write a piece about her for the local newspaper, telling everyone that she wrote Monstrous Sea. Eliza was understandably upset by this, I would be too, no one likes it when your parents tell your secrets to everyone. I was upset when reading this part because I did not know how she was going to fix her relationship with Wallace, because he did not like that she didn't tell him.

    1. I completely agree. I was so upset when I read that Wallace was basically crushed. I had been so hopeful for Eliza with Wallace. They helped one another so much. I did not want that to be over! Her parents should have never done that without speaking to Eliza. Even though they did not know she was keeping it a secret they should have thought that she might be embarrassed.

  11. I dont agree with the fact that Eliza's parents told that she wrote Monstrous Sea. I know that they did not realize she was keeping it secret but they should have know. They should have been talking more with their daughter and known that she was keeping it a secret. They really should have been aware of the fact that she had this issue with Wallace and Eliza should have gotten their advice on it. I guess the bottom line is really that when you are a teenager you should be able to talk to your parents about anything. They should care enough to be interested and want to hear every detail. The alternative to this would be that Eliza was open with her parents and told them. This would have avoided the issue entirely.

  12. The most important conflict in the book is between Eliza and Wallace. When I read how Eliza's parents shared publicly that Eliza created Monstrous Sea I felt sick! Eliza has a loving family but they are more sports-minded than she is so they do not have a lot in common. Eliza keeps to herself. When Wallace arrived at her school and she was asked to show him around she felt that it was kind of a pain. Then she realized he did not talk much. When he found out that she was a Monstrous Sea fan that all changed! Wallace was the first person Eliza met in real life that was a fan of the series. Their friendship grew immensely. When Eliza's parents revealed that she was the creator of Monstrous Sea Wallace stopped speaking to her. This was devastating to Eliza. Her anxiety became overwhelming, which I can totally relate to. It upset me when Wallace seemed to only care that Eliza allow him to put Monstrous Sea into novel form. That was rather selfish. She agreed but her anxiety was to the point of her being suicidal. I am proud of the ways Eliza's brothers stood up for her at the end. I still dont think her parents understood how anxious all of this made her.
