Carver briggs feels very sorrowful, i know this because he said “Then theres me, I would definitely killed my three best friends.”Carver also feels sad, he shows this when he answer jasmyns question like this; “Jasmyn asked are you okay? Yeah. I lie. A few seconds pass. No.” Carver tries to suppress his emotions but then he realizes that he is not truly okay. Carver is also very lonely now, his only 3 friends, which were his best friends have just died. Finally, Carver is withdrawn, this is shown when he collapses and his sister finds him on the floor, she even thought he took drugs.
Carver thinks it is his fault that his friends died in the crash because right before they crashed, Carver texted Mars (his friend) and asked where they were at, and he thinks/knows that he was the last person to text him before they crashed into a big rig. Carver thinks that him dying right there on the spot would make everything better, he thinks this because his 3 best friends in the entire world just died in a car crash that he believes he caused, how could his life get any better he thinks.

    1. If i were Carver, I would feel the same way after i lost my friends as well. It is normal to go through those things during grief we just have to learn to cope with our feelings.

    2. I agree with most of what you’ve said but instead of lonely, I believe he feels more guilty. In the story he constantly talks about how he feels guilty over killing his friends, or creating a void in their families. I understand where lonely came from because he’s definitely lonely, but I genuinely think he is more guilty than lonely.

    3. I agree that Carver feels guilty for the deaths of his friends and that it is making the grieving process worse. I think that Carver isn’t guilty and is blaming himself which is completely making it worse. I also feel that everybody around him that is blaming him shouldn’t be and should understand how he feels.

Carver’s friends, Eli, Mars, and Blake all died in car crash while answering a text he sent them. He goes to all of their funerals where he befriends Jesmyn and examines how others feel about him after knowing what happened in the crash. Carver feels very guilty about the crash so he goes to Blake’s grandmother’s, Nana Betsy, to help her with the things Blake used to do around the house so he can get rid of some of the guilt. Carver begins having panic attacks over the situation and the guilt, but he refuses to talk to his parents because it’s embarrassing. His sister and Jesmyn push him to see someone professional about it if he’s not going to talk to his parents, he is currently considering it. Mars's dad is a judge and is trying to get Carver charged for having a hand in his son's death, so Carver is getting a lawyer to help him on the case and he is told he can’t talk about the case to anyone except for his lawyer.

A good topic that might be a good essay topic is whether or not Carver is guilty or not guilty for killing his friends, because the story makes you want to sympathize with Carver and say it wasn’t his fault but if you were someone looking on the outside you may say he’s guilty and should be punished. A question that might appear on an exam is maybe “Why doesn’t Carver get help?”, he doesn’t get help because he’s embarrassed to talk to his parents about it and feels he is unworthy of help.

    1. I feel like the topic of if carver is guilty or not is good one because carver obviously thinks it’s his fault but there are other people who think it is not his fault like his friends Nana. There are different people to put the blame on, for example Mars's dad blames carver, you don't expect someone's father to believe it is possible that it is his son's fault, it is always someone else's.

    2. Carver does feel guilty and that's why he doesnt want to get help or talk to anyone because he feels like hes undeserving of it. But I can see what you are saying about the outsider looking in part, that does make him seem like he deserves a punishment not knowing the whole story.

This week I was a discussion director for Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner. Carver Briggs is grieving the lives of his three best friends who lost their lives in a texting car accident. He feels guilty because the driver of the car was in the process of sending him a response to his previous text. Carver’s senior year session at school is soon to begin when all this takes place. Everyone at school is pitted against him except his one and only friend Jesmyn Holder.
The main purpose of these first 100 pages was to introduce the story and understand the struggles that the main character now endures in his everyday life. The most important event that happened in the first section of the book is when Carver’s best friend Mars grandma asked him to have a “goodbye day” with her. This to me was the most important part because that goodbye day will help them cherish their final memories of Mars. As I was reading the book I was thinking about what it would be like to not only lose my one best friend but to lose three of them. I was also wondering what it would feel like for the families of those killed in the incident.

I feel like the first one hundred pages were to definitely introduce us to the characters and let us get a taste of how everyone is feeling, Carver, Mars's Dad, Blakes Nana, and we can start to feel what this book is going to be leading into and what we can expect.

    2. I completely agree that the goodbye day part was one of the most important parts, it sets up the plot for the entire story and helps you infer what’s going to happen next. For example, he may take up this one goodbye day, feel less guilty afterwards, and then do more and more until he has fully coped with all of his guilt and sadness.

This book made me think about Thirteen Reasons Why because it starts off with death and what it is like for that persons close friends and family afterwards. I also think it is a lot like Thirteen Reasons Why because the main character thinks that they are responsible for the death of their friend(s). Another reason that I think it is like Thirteen Reasons Why is because the main character is going around to the places his friends used to go and in the TV show the main character Goes around to all the places his friend was before she died.

“She shakes her head in a way that would put cartoon dollar signs in a chiropractors eyes” (Zentner 49) This line really shows how georgia feels about marshall's dad blaming carver for his son checking his phone after carver had texted him, resulting in the crash and death of his son and carvers three best friends, he throws carver under the bus and is even taking him to court, because he believes it is truly Carvers fault, since he is mourning the death of his son, he is looking for someone to blame, he isn't going to come out and say that his son checked his phone and caused his own death and the other two kids.
“If this remotely turns into a thing, Im packing carvers ass in my trunk and driving him to Mexico.” (Zentner 50) You can really tell how georgia feels about her little brother and this situation all together, she is willing to pack her brother in her trunk and take him across the border which is very illegal, just proves to us her loyalty and what she would do to save her brother, she really just doesn't understand how or why Marshall's dad is trying to blame carver she even thought about calling him and cussing him out and yelling at him for putting carver on trial, but that wouldn't be much help for the case and would probably just get her arrested.

    1. I agree with everything you’re saying and I also believe those quotes prove how much Georgia cares about her little brother. Both quotes show how Georgia feels about her brother being on trial and how her temper can maybe get the best of her a lot of the times, but it also truly does show how much she actually cares.

    2. I also agree that these quotes show that Georgia care about her brother a lot. I think that Georgia cares about her brother a lot and she would do anything for him. She would leave behind everything to keep her brother safe. I think that she would take her brother to another country if it meant he was safe.

    3. These quotes show the bond that Georgia has with Carver and how an older sibling should look out for the younger one. Georgia has been through trials in her life where she can help Carver and give him advice to deal with his struggles. It is just up to Carver to listen and take note of what she is saying so that he can get and better and learn to cope with his grieving.

The last 100 page was Carver still grieving over his friends death’s, he goes to school, has a panic attack, and his sister ends up getting him a therapist. He spends a lot of time hanging out with Jesmyn and listening to her play piano. His therapist then tells him that maybe the goodbye day isn’t such a bad idea, So he does it. He goes, fishing with Nana Betsy, goes out to eat, and sees a movie with her, ending our section of reading with Carver deciding to tell Nana Betsy that Blake was gay.
I think maybe the major part of the section we’re reading was the Goodbye day he did for Blake. It revealed so much as to who Blake was as a person. Other important events were Carver finally seeing a therapist, feeling a little better, and Carver deciding to tell Nana Betsy that Blake was gay. I feel like the author did this to maybe show how well Carver really knew Blake, this could also be important information to the future of the story. I predict Carver will do more Goodbye days so he can end all of his friends story and maybe feel a little comfort.

    1. The goodbye day did reveal who Blake truly was as a person. I agree that when Carver told Nana Betsy that Blake was gay just showed how close Carver was to all of his friends that passed and he loved him for who they were. I also agree with the prediction that Carver is going to have goodbye days for the rest of his friends that passed.

    2. I feel like in this section both Carver and Nana Betsy learn something new about Blake. Carver learns that Blake didn't have a great life before he moved to Tennessee. And Nana Betsy learns that Blake was gay.

From pages 101- 200 in Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner, Carver and Jesymn attempt to go to school for the first day of their senior year. As Carver goes into school he sees a memory poster of his three best friends. Seeing this makes him feel overwhelmed and he ends up having another panic attack. His sister picked him up from school and immediately made him an appointment with therapist Dr. Mendez. The next day he ends up having to miss half of the school day to make his appointment. Carver was reluctant to open up at first but eventually he opened up just slightly. For the rest of this section, Carver and Adair have an argument, Carver agrees to have the “Goodbye Day” with Blake's grandmother, and Carver has another panic attack.
“It’s built like some awful orgasm; once it tips there’s no return.” (Zentner 113). When Carver says this he is talking about the panic attack he is about to have. He didn’t want it to happen in front of everyone on the first day of school. Carver then realizes that it’s too late and that there is nothing he can do about it now. That quote shows importance because it leads up to Carver seeing a therapist. “...give yourself a new context for experiencing something.” (Zentner 144). Carver’s therapist Dr. Mendez says this when Carver was asking him about having a goodbye day. Dr. Mendez says this because when people go into something with a new positive mindset, it can change the way they view things. This quote was worth saying again because it impacted Carver positively. “I hope you go to jail. I really do. I hope you die there.” (Zentner 152). During the argument that Adair and Carver have in the hallway at school, Adair says this to him. She says this statement because her brother died in the accident and she is bitter and hurt from it. She wants Carver to feel her pain but worse than the way she feels it because she thinks that he is responsible for the incident. This quote is important to the passage because it shows the way that Adair really feels and why she treats people the way she does.

    1. I believe the quote you used does lead up to Carver seeing a therapist, he’s clearly fed up with having panic attack after panic attack. I also never thought about how the way Adair insulted him in the hall showed how she felt and how she wanted him to hurt as well, I think this might be important to the stories future if he decides to do more Goodbye days.

    2. I feel like the panic attack that you mentioned is/was definitely good for carver because when he went he wasn't sure about the therapist, but then he decided to open up, that's good for him so he doesn't feel like he has no one to talk to and say how he feels.

  10. In this section we are introduced to Dr.Mendez Carver’s therapist. Dr Mendez is caring because he talks to Georgia, his old patient, and remembers a lot about her. He also listens to what Carver has to say about his friends deaths. Dr. Mendez is patient because he is listening to Carver and he doesn't interrupt a lot. He is also helpful because he answers Carver’s questions and he tells Carver that he should come back if he wants to get better. Dr.Mendez is also honest because he tells Carver that some people come to him and don’t need to but they still get better. He also says that Carver does need to be there because of the grief he is experiencing also he is having panic attacks. Dominic

    1. I think what Dr.Mendez meant about people coming to him and not "needing" him was saying something like, most people who see him say they don't need him when they actually do because most people say they don't need therapists help when they're forced to go to a therapist.

    2. I think that Dr. Mendez is helpful, but not by answering Carvers questions. In the book Dr. Mendez never directly answers Carvers question but instead, he guides him by telling Carver to this about the pros and cons of each decision. Everything else I agree with about Dr. Mendez's character.

    3. I think dr mendez is good for carver, even though he never directly answers his questions it is still good for carver to have some advice, even if it is just about what consequences come with every action, he shouldn't tell him what to do but make him question the consequences of his actions

“Two months after the accident and I’m already getting to the point where I suspect my brain of creating false memories of them. Sauce Crew fan fiction. Where you can’t remember if it’s something you dreamed or something that actually happened. You believe dreams.” (Zentmer 256) my reason for selecting this quote is because it shows how grief is affecting Carver. It’s causing him to think things he dreamed are real, because he’s upset they can’t happened anymore. Grief is shown differently throughout each and every human and Carver’s just so happens to be through false memories, but they’re bringing him comfort as well, even though fake memories is concerning.
“I can’t imagine when or why this would’ve happened. I don’t remember any other occasion besides this once that we did this. I don’t remember any other details but my brain is convinced that it did happen. If my brain wants to manufacture new memories of them, I’ll accept it and I won’t ask too many questions.” (Zentmer 256-257) This shows that though creating new memories that didn’t happen could be troublesome for some, but it isn’t for Carver. It’s bringing him comfort, because he can’t make new memories with his friends ever again, However his brain is creating them out of nowhere. It makes sense that yeah, he’d be a little concerned about it but then again he also wants it to happen because he wants to make more memories with his friends, and his brain is doing just that to help him cope.

    1. These two quotes intertwine with each other and show how Carver is creating false memories in his mind. This is one of the ways that helps Carver copes with the pain he is dealing with healthily. Everyone does experience grief differently, but this just so happens to be the way that Carver is dealing with it which he is okay with.

    2. I totally agree with what you said, every person deals with pain and grief differently, and this is carvers way of doing it. I’m not sure what's causing these false memories even if they are comforting carter i think that he definitely needs to tell someone about them, because it cannot be good in the long run.

      Delete
    3. I agree that this is Carver’s way of dealing with the grief and I agree with Weston that he should tell Dr.Mendez. I also think that Carver is creating the memories because he is constantly thinking about his friends but he may not be able to tell if they are real or fake because parts of them might be true.

During page 201-300, Carver is finishing his goodbye day for Eli with Nana Betsy. They are still sharing things with each other that the other one didn’t know about Blake like the fact that he was homosexual and got neglected as a child. Carver does Nana a brave favor by calling Blake’s mother and telling her what happened. Later on in this section, Jesmyn suggests doing a goodbye day for Eli with his parents. Everyone agrees with the idea except for Adair so they go forth with the plan. This goodbye day goes way differently than what Blakes did. Eli’s parents argue the whole time, his dad tells Carver that he holds him responsible for his son's death, and basically tells him not to ever get with Jesmyn because he shouldn’t benefit from Eli’s death.
Do you think the author is asking you to believe things book eist when we know they do not? Why and How? I don't think that's true. Although the book talks about there being a God, a heaven, and a hell there is also talk about there not being any of that. The book does a good job of balancing all of the different faiths the characters have so it doesn’t make you feel like you have to believe what each character does. To sum up this question, no I do not think that the author is asking you to believe anything because of the variety of opinions it gives you.
What ideas or events seem similar to things you know about people? I know that usually when grieve they grieve in different ways. I also know that numerous people tend to have anxiety because of things that remind them of the loved ones they may have lost. Although the panic attacks that Carver gets seem odd to him, I think something of that nature would be expected due to the circumstances. As a result, Carver is not alone when it comes to having panic attacks and anxiety when it comes to dealing with grief.

    1. I feel like the dad is just lost and wants someone to blame, which still isn't a good thing. They were supposed to be having a goodbye day but Eli's father turned it into something far more. 2. I completely agree with you saying the book has a perfect balance of faiths. Carver isn’t just getting anxiety over grief but over the guilt and crushing loneliness he feels. “She tells me Blake loved licking the eggbeater so much that if he wasn't around, shed put it in a bowl in the fridge for him later.”(Zentner 210) I think the fact of nana betsy being around carver is really nice and caring, she knows that carver is obviously feeling some type of way about his three best friends dying in a car crash especially since people are putting the blame on carver. Carver needs someone he can talk to besides Eli’s girlfriend, nana betsy shares things about blake to carver and carver shares things about blake to nana betsy. I'm not sure nana betsy has too many friends so i think this relationship is good for her too.
“That’s always helpful advice, especially because it always comes when you feel like you’re standing at the gallows.“ (Zentner 245)
Carver feels as if there is no hanging in there on this case, His best friends dad is blaming his son’s death on him, all because carver texted Mars while he was driving with his two other friends, and he happened to crash into the back of a truck killing them instantly. His lawyer tells him to hang in there, son, but how can carver hang onto anything when he is possibly being put on trial for something that is completely not his fault, and that he couldn’t have really prevented in the first place, I don’t understand why Mars’s father is blaming carver? What does he gain having from having him prosecuted?

    1. The goodbye day for Blake was a good experience for both Carver and Nana Betsy. They experience it together like friends would and they cry and laugh together. Although the relationship between the two of them is beneficial when Nana Betsy moves Carver won’t have that relationship except for over the phone or if she happens to visit. When Carver says that's helpful advice, he was being sarcastic because telling someone to hang in there is bad advice. It is bad advice because when there is nothing left to hang on to then it makes it even more difficult.

      Delete
    2. Mars’ dad is blaming Carver because he doesn’t want to believe that it could possibly be his own sons fault too. We don’t want to believe our loved ones would ever do something to hurt themselves or others and sometimes we make excuses or blame others for what they’ve done even if they’re not fully guilty.

    3. I think that Blake's goodbye day was very helpful for both Carver and Nana Betsy and that it allowed both of them to heal. Also I think that Mars's dad trying to get the DA to prosecute is a bad idea because it wont really benefit ether person.

  14. In this section Carver’s goodbye day for Blake ends with Carver having to tell Blake’s mom that Blake died. Then Carver received a call from a police officer and wants him to go down to the station and talk about the accident. Carver says he needs to call his lawyer and then him and Mr.Krantz go down to the station with Carver’s parents. Everytime that the Lieutenant asks Carver a question Mr. Krantz says that Carver is using his fifth amendment right and doesn't answer. A couple days pass and Jesmyn and Carver do a goodbye day with Eli’s parents. This goodbye day is different though because instead of doing things that Eli liked to do they go to an area that Eli hiked at with his parents and they dump out handfuls of sand which was one of Eli’s first art projects. Before they leave they go to the bathroom where Eli’s dad talks to Carver about how he blames him for Eli’s death and how he should leave Jesmyn alone. This causes Carver to have a panic attack in the bathroom. Do you think that the reason Adair wanted her parents to go to the goodbye day is so that her dad could talk to Carver?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Adair might’ve wanted her parents to go because maybe Carver would say something incriminating around them, or maybe she just didn’t want to see him because she blames him for most of the bad things in herlife. Other than that she might’ve wanted her dad to scare Carver, so he would stay away from jesmyn or something.

When Carver tried to get with Jesmyn it reminded me of a musical called Dear Evan Hansen where this kid, named Evan Hansen, tries to get with his dead “best friend’s” sister. Though the relationships between the dead characters and their loved ones are completely different it reminded me of how it’s usually seen as weird for someone’s best friend to get with their significant other or family member after they died because I’m guessing people think they were only friends so the other could get with them, maybe it’s just seen as disrespectful to the dead person or it could have something to do with timing.
Another connection would be how Carver got jealous so easily, like most real life people do when they get crushes. Usually when people have crushes they want it to work out so badly they do and say things they don’t mean. I think in Carver’s case this is what happened since he said he had fallen in love with Jesmyn, he wanted it to work out so badly that he said things to her that he didn’t mean, though him having a crush doesn’t excuse how he acted towards her.

    2. The connection the the musical is a good connection because it is pretty much the same scenario in our book Goodbye Days. Also Carver is jealous because everything that he loved was taken from him and now he can’t love Jesmyn the way he wants to.

  17. Carver says that being close to waterfalls always reminds him of how tiny, fragile, and finite he is.(zentner 280) I think it really is pretty crazy how small we are compared to this world. You are just one human, but there are billions on the same planet, and you will never encounter pretty much most of those people. Like there are so many different kinds of people culturally, and literally, they speak completely different languages but they are still a human. There are good people and bad people, and that is mainly based on how they want to live their life or how they chose to treat people based on their life experiences. Carver also mentions to Jesmyn that he has never seen those two like that(zentner 278), It is always super awkward when you are at your friends house and their parents are arguing you just sit there with nothing to do. Imagine having your best friends parents fighting over whether it is your fault their son is dead. Carver is just trying to have a nice goodbye day for Eli but his parents just want to slander him and make him feel bad. Free Carver from da jam (everyone hating on him)

During the last 100 pages of Goodbye Days, Carver and Jesmyn go to a concert and get into an argument. Carver also found out that he would be prosecuted. Mars' father, Judge Edwards, calls Carver and demands a goodbye day. Despite the fact that Carver has to sneak around his parents to go he goes anyway. The day started off tragically but ended up taking a turn for the better.
Throughout the book, Carver has learned to become a good listener. One example of this is when he was with Judge Edwards. Numerous times the Judge had just been talking at Carver and he had just been listening. Carver is also adventurous. When the Sauce Crew were together they would do things like chase squirrels and get reactions out of people. Whitout Sauce Crew and Carver were still chasing squirrels and went on those eventful goodbye days.
Carver was a strong character during the book. Although Carver broke down sometimes he still survived regardless of all the pain he was enduring. He and Jesmyn had moral support for each other. The last trait is that Carver was affectionate and showed affection to other people. Before Sauce Crew died, Carver loved them like brothers. Carver also loved and cared for his sister Georgia. Even though Jesmyn didn’t feel the same way about Carver, he still showed love and affection toward her.

I also agree that carver became more confident as the book went on. Carver started out as kind of secluded to himself and his sister, but by the end of the book he was a different person.

    3. I agree that Carver has become a better listener over the course of the book. I think that this os a good trait to have and I think that when he listened to Mars’s dad during his goodbye day it showed that he respected the judge and would do what he said.

  19. I think that the most important parts of the last 100 pages were Carver and Jesmyn arguing after the concert and them not talking for a while and Mars’s goodbye day. I think that the author included Carver and Jesmyn arguing to show that Carver still has not healed fully. I think the reason Carver kept saying things he did not want to is because he did not think he deserved to be friends with Jesmyn because he still feels guilty.
I think that the purpose for Mars’s goodbye day was to show how much Mars’s dad blamed Carver and to make Carver feel guilty. I feel the reason for the second part of the goodbye day was to actually act as a goodbye day and for Mars’s dad to learn that Mars used what he taught him but Mars still wanted to pursue his own interests and not do everything just to impress his dad. I also think that Mars’s dad had to know that Mars did admire his father and he just wanted him to accept him.

    1. I agree, the first part of Carver's goodbye day was literally there to make him miserable until Carver stood up for himself. His and Jesmyn's fight was also important because he would often wish he could text jesmyn in throughout the rest of the chapters.

    2. When Jesmyn and Carver got into the argument, I agree that was a very important part. I also agree that Carver was getting closer to recovering from the accident but that incident showed that he still was healed completely. During Mars’ goodbye day, it gave Carver the opportunity to stand up to Judge Edwards. Even though it took the Judge a while to accept it, it still happened for the greater good.

  20. I think the argument was a big part of the last chapters of the book. Jesmyn and Carver got really close since the accident happened and now Carver doesn't have anyone who he feels he can talk to like he did before, or even have some type of connection. He needs someone like Jesmyn in his life.
