The setting takes place in Garden Heights in 2017. Starr Carter went to an all white school, she also had a white boyfriend Chris and all of her black friends thought she liked white people better and her dad Maverick Carter want Starr to date an white boy but Starr's mom Lisa Carter didn't care what color he was she just wanted Starr to be happy. Starr went to a party with all black people and an old friend named Khalil approuched Starr and they laughed and she wasn't really a party person so they left. After they left they were pulled over.
When Khalil and Starr were riding in the car when they got pulled over. Khalil shouldn't have reached for the brush because everybody knows a white cop won't hesitate to kill a black man or women. Khalil was making sure Starr was okay but us black people knowing how white cops treat us, he should've stayed where he was at. The cop had a reason to get scared but he had no reason to shoot without knowing exactly what Khalil had in his hand. Us black people refuse to give our identity and other information because we like we don't need to be harassed all the time.
The Hate You Give is what i've always went through and what i've seen. When i read this book, i could't stop reading it. I don't like reading books but books like this one i can read all the way through because i can relate to these things. When i found i found out Star went to an all white school i thought this has to be me. I've never been with someone when a cop shot and killed them but i have had a boyfriend and a boy bestfriend get shot and killed. I wish i could speak up like Starr did because i hate having to wake up and see somebody else i knew got killed and i just have to sit there and cry because i ca't do anything else because i mean what can you do about someone being dead other than speaking how you feel or crying?
